YAOUNDE, Cameroon (AP) — At least six people have died in a stampede outside a stadium hosting an African Cup of Nations soccer game in Cameroon, an official said Monday.
Naseri Paul Biya, governor of the central region of Cameroon, said there could be more casualties.
The stampede happened as crowds struggled to get access to Olembe Stadium in the Cameroon capital of Yaounde to watch the host country play Comoros in a last 16 knockout game in Africa’s top soccer tournament.
Officials at the nearby Messassi hospital said they had received at least 40 injured people from the stampede.
“Some of the injured are in desperate condition,” said Olinga Prudence, a nurse. “We will have to evacuate them to a specialized hospital.”
Soccer officials said around 50,000 people had tried to attend the match. The stadium has a capacity of 60,000 but it was not meant to be more than 80% full for the game due to restrictions on the size of the crowd because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Cameroon won the game 2-1 to reach the quarterfinals.
” I cannot be happy when our Black Stars have not performed. I share in the pain of the entire country, I share in the pain of everybody who follows the Ghanaian sport.
This is the time we need cool head to navigate the Black Stars to the levels that we desire. The journey to make Black Stars champions did not start two years ago. The journey started the last time the Black Stars won the AFCON.
The last time the Black Stars did not go beyond the group stage was in 2006, it was a year that the Black Stars qualified for the mundial. When there’s success, the team takes responsibility, when there’s defeat, the team takes responsibility.
We went out to represent Ghana and make Ghana proud. We went out with a clear plan to win the championship, it did not work. The team did not perform like we expected.
I said that coach Milovan has been the best thing Ghana has ever had when we talk about expatriate coaches. I’ve heard people say that beyond Ghana he didn’t achieve, that is true but it’s also true of many top coaches across the world.
It is also true that Milovan has had an unfortunate time with our Black Stars. Unfortunate in the sense that he’s never had even 4 days of uninterrupted training with the squad.
It is important that we all have cool head, go through the right process and make the decisions for Ghana football and we believe that we have the men to take those decisions that will eventually bring Ghana back to winning ways.
The minister of state responsible for sports wants the Black Stars to win, I want the Black Stars to win, I want to be an African champion so we will engage and discuss on all fronts and take decisions that will best in the interest of our country.
Fixing the Ghanaian football problem starts from the very foundation. It is the responsibility of everyone in EXCO around this time to have cool heads to ensure that we have the right decisions being taken for our dear Black Stars.
In terms of the players, these are the best intangible assets we have available to the technical team. Every player who made himself available and is of the highest quality found his way into the 28 man squad.
This is a group of dedicated players, they never spoke about money, they never discussed money. They wanted glory for our dear country but glory didn’t come. That’s why I keep saying we need to support these group of players”.
The Ghana Football Association has purchased one hundred (100) manual substitution boards to be distributed to the various Regional Football Associations (RFA).

We have taken delivery of 100 manual substitution boards to be distributed to the RFA’s and some league centres in the division one and Women’s Premier League without substitution boards.
“It is our aim to enhancing refereeing and as we keep on equipping referees. The referees also use the electronic boards and we hope to buy more of it.’ he explained.
These interventions by the GFA, are aimed at improving refereeing to enhance their performance across competitions.
On 13 January 2022, Gabon played Ghana at Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium in Yaounde. Cameroon. The match officials indicated in their report that at the final whistle, Ghana player Benjamin Tetteh allegedly assaulted a Gabonese player.

Among the guests at this prestigious event, a hundred refugees from the Central African Republic, Chad, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Togo, Côte d’Ivoire, and Rwanda. They took their places in the stands, vibrating to the rhythm of the spectacle offered by the teams on the lawn.
The moment of communion was captured by the UNHCR officers also present for the opening ceremony and the scheduled matches.
The day before, some of the refugees played a football match.
The initiative of UNHCR, the United Nations Refugee Agency, is supported by CAF which makes a point of bringing joy and hope to communities and vulnerable people.
UNHCR’s primary mission is to safeguard the rights and well-being of people who have been forced to flee. The agency works alongside its partners and communities to ensure that everyone has the right to seek asylum and find safe refuge in another country. UNHCR also strive to secure lasting solutions.
